International Tolerance Day

359Today, November 16, is International Tolerance day. First celebrated in 1996 and made n holiday but the United Nations, this day seems to go quite unrecognized. I myself with admit I had not heard of it until recently.

I think the purpose of the event is best summed up in this quote by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. “World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor — it requires only that they live together with mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement.” This quote makes a lot of sense. Many people think they are expected to go out and befriend the people who are different from them. But, the main goal of tolerance is just to respect those who are different from us; to consider them a human being of equal important in this world as yourself.

While the United Nations was hoping for people to mostly be tolerant of other religions and races on this day, the same tolerance can also be expected towards people with tattoos, piercings, and extreme body modifications. While one person may think their weirdo neighbor looks even funnier than before with his new subdermal implants he should respect that neighbor either way.

Ear Pointing

ear-sculptingMany people like to wear cat head bands or elf ear headbands for fun. But what if there was a more permanent way to have pointed ears. Of course there is movie make up techniques one could use to achieve the pointed ear look, but this can be annoying and time consuming to apply. There are fake ears you can put over your own ears, but these could alter your hearing and be very uncomfortable. Then we come to the best way to get pointed ears, having your own ears modified with an ear point procedure.

Ear pointing is a somewhat simple body modification. It basically is just removing tissue from the tip of the ear and connecting the two edges with sutures. Some people attempt the procedure on their own but it is best to seek a professional. A bad ear pointing could lead to ear collapse. And, as with any botched job, infections.

634762290_549bf29076Pointed ears are nothing new. Dennis Avner, most commonly known as “Stalking Cat,” has had his ears modified to look like that of a cat for some time now.

Fans of Star Trek will recognize this look from the Vulcans and Romulans. But, for the Vulcan and Romulan actors I’mr_spockm quite sure it was just clever make up.

Magnetic Implants

Magnets are now for more than your fridge or finding the paperclips around your office. They can now be placed under your skin to serve numerous functions. I myself found a little surprising but at the same time quite interesting.

These subdermal implants have been around in the dental and reconstructive surgery fields for a while but are still relatively new to the body mod world. Some early reports of magnetic implants came about in the early 1990’s but these implants where quite weak and could not do much. These were more experimental.

In recent years Steve Haworth and Jesse Jarrell have come up with more useful magnetic implants. These magnets have a gold plating and silicone casing to protect the skin. There are a few different kinds.

Sensory implants allow one to feel where there are electromagnetic fields. The magnet under one’s skin starts to move when in the presence of an electromagnetic field. This sixth sense has led people to say magnetic implants could be the first super hero modification.

Then there are sexual implants.  Small magnets are placed in the genital organs of each member of a couple. This creates enhanced sensation for the couple when the locations with magnets touch. The implant would also work for the lips of a couple and kissing.

Symbolic implants are similar to sexual implants but they are usually in the couples hands. This creates an actual physical bond when the two hold hands. This does not however make them get stuck together, the same goes for sexual implants.

Then there are magnetic implants designed to be purely functional. These implants are larger and stronger allowing them to be able pick things up with their implanted magnets. This person would never have trouble finding a paperclip in a desk drawer.

Even the more modern implants do have their downsides of course. But this is true of all body modifications. The silicone casing has been known to rupture in quite a few cases allowing the body to be exposed to the metals and material of the implant.

A social networking site for modified people.

Bodymodifications.net is a site for people with modifications of all kinds. From piercings, tattoos, to larger modifications like implants all are accepted here.

It is like a Flickr or other photo sharing site but for pictures of other body modifications. The most popular feature would be being able to see peoples pictures but members can also send messages to one another and instant messages from the site. This could be great for someone who isn’t sure they are ready to take the plunge and get a new thing done. It is also good to show off work you have done or you have done on other people. If a person does not upload modification pictures they cannot be a member that is visible.

In the FAQ section of the site they have a list of site stats. The site is 37% male, 51% female. I guess the remaining 12% are undeclared. The average member age is 23.61. The country with the most active members is Finland with about 2,608. Brazil is in second with 424 active members.

Teeth Filing

Sumatran girlToothfiling is the practice of reshaping ones teeth to get a certain shape, usually all pointed teeth.

The best way to get this procedure done is to go to a dental professional, doing the procedure at home can possibly forever damage ones teeth. A dentist will be able to give you an anesthetic or another pain reducer. They can also tell you any risks associated with the procedure. It is said to be about as painful as getting a tooth drilled.

Teeth filing is mostly practiced in Indonesia, the Philippines, and parts of Africa but is said to have also have been practiced by the ancient Mesoamericans in their time.

The procedure does have its benefits as crazy as that sounds. It is said to reduce the risk of cavities and other dental problems. This is also said to be one of the reasons why some people have their teeth filed.

Filed teeth can be reversed but it is much more painful to have it reversed than to have it done to begin with. So, if you get your teeth filed make sure you really want it.

Teeth filing should not be confused Vampire teeth were caps are placed on top toothfiling-tmof teeth.

Hello world

I have always been very interested in body art since i first learned about it as a very young child. I wanted tattoos since I learned about them around the age of 4. Most of my body art interests are tattoos as you can guess, but I have always liked seeing piercings, and body modifications. I am starting this blog to talk about my findings in my research and experiences with tattoos and other body art topics such as getting pierced for the first time. I will be starting a new feature for the paper I write for at my college but that will just focus on people at the college, and this blog will talk about more world wide topics. I will also try to keep up on body art/modification news. I have never had a blog before so bear with me people. It may be a slow process but I promise to make this great and do good writing with good grammar.
